The trail continues west towards Jumbo Rocks Campground, and has interpretive plaques which highlight the area’s flora, fauna and culture. Beyond Jumbo Rocks, the trail loops back to Skull Rock
2. Discovery Trail
Distance: .7 miles, loop
Discovery Trail is a fun and easy .7-mile (1.1 km) loop hike designed especially for young explorers. Discovery Trail loops around the boulder fields opposite Skull Rock and explores a slot canyon, sharing easy-to-understand details along the way about Joshua Tree’s unique and unusual features. Great for families, the trail was developed by local kids from the Morongo Unified School District under guidance from park rangers in 2012, and built by high school students from the Youth Conservation Corps in 2013. Discovery Trail gives visitors of all ages an opportunity to stretch their legs, have fun exploring, and learn about Joshua Tree’s best highlights.
2. Arch Rock Trail
Distance: 1.4 miles, lollipop loop
Perfect for families with curious children, Arch Rock Trail is an easy-going 1.4-mile out-and-back hike to famous Arch Rock. The trail meanders over an open tract of desert to a small loop around the rock arch and other fascinating rock shapes, including a series of boulders juting from the earth which resemble the spine of a dinosaur. Interpretive signs around Arch Rock provide insight into the geological forces that shaped Joshua Tree. Arch Rock is close to White Tank Campground, but the area is across the street at the Twin Tanks parking area.
3. Cottonwood Spring Oasis
Distance: .25-mile stroll, round trip
Introduce your family to the wonders of an oasis with the Cottonwood Spring Trail. This easy quarter-mile trip takes you to Cottonwood Spring Oasis, a serene spot surrounded by lush vegetation. The charming oasis is major bird habitat an bighorn sheep watering hole. Interpretive signs around the oasis give a look into the oasis’s historic uses as it was a popular stopover stop for miners and travelers, and an important cultural sight for Indigenous people. The area here connects with trails leading to Mastodon Mine, Winona Mill, and Lost Palms Oasis.
4. Barker Dam Loop
Distance: 1.1 miles, loop
Barker Dam Loop seamlessly weaves together nature and history, making it an ideal family hike. The 1.1-mile loop takes you to a historic water reservoir surrounded by impressive rock formations. Kids will be captivated by the stories of early ranchers who built the dam walls. The relatively short distance and flat terrain make it a family-friendly trail, providing an opportunity for both adventure and learning. On the return loop, check out petroglyphs in a nook on a rock face, and learn about the importance of proptecting cultural resources.
